The Gibbon boys wrestling team took on the best in Class C duals competition at the state duals tournament in Kearney last Saturday. Entering the tournament as the eighth seed, the squad won two duals and lost one to place fifth. The loss was to the eventual Class C state champion Pierce team. One of the wins was over conference rival St. Paul. See more about the tournament on page 6. (—courtesy photo)
The Cairo Volunteer Fire Department had a great turnout for their training held Tuesday, February 3. They worked on burn ops, which in this case, is setting up a wet line (water on whatever fuel they are working with), then burning up to the wet line with drip torches and flares. The idea is using fire to fight fire. The department would deploy this technique on rapidly growing, and hard to control fires, where they simply don’t have enough water or resources to stop it traditionally. This method is highly effective, but takes a lot of practice and understanding of fuel behaviors, tools used and positioning of trucks, and a typically hard to come by, degree of cooperation from Mother Nature. The firemen with the Cairo Volunteer Fire Department are working hard to make sure they have the knowledge necessary to stop any sort of fire!
