The Wood River Area Community Choir is in its 20th continuous year in existence and continued success has been the dedication of a nucleus of singers throughout the surrounding area who are willing to sacrifice their time to bring quality and enjoyable music to the community. The choir is under the direction of Vincent Boudreau.
The Cairo Volunteer Fire Department was called to a fire at the Myers and Sons Livestock and Land Company southwest of Cairo on Monday, January 8, at around 1:30 p.m. Firefighters from Cairo, Alda, Wood River and Grand Island spent three anda- half hours battling the blaze during the snowstorm with high winds that moved through the region. Cairo Fire Chief Steve Oseka said that the blaze burned in a old, unused grain elevator. He said that firefighters’ biggest concern was keeping the fire from spreading to nearby grain bins that were full of corn. Oseka said that a fire marshal’s investigation indicated that the fire was likely electrical in nature. “We really appreciated all the volunteers and other departments that kept coming out and helping,” Chief Oseka stated. For many years, residents of Gibbon have grown accustomed to hearing the city’s sirens sound at 7:00 a.m., 12:00 noon, 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. six days per week, when Gibbon Volunteer Fire and Rescue members are summoned for an emergency; and when dangerous storms threaten the city. In recent weeks, residents have noticed that those sirens have not been sounding, even during emergencies. Gibbon City Administrator Matt Smallcomb recently offered answers to questions about the silent sirens to keep residents abreast of the situation.
A variety of different removal techniques were pressed into use Tuesday morning in the aftermath of the snowstorm that roared through the region on Monday. City of Gibbon crews worked to clear LaBarre Street in the city’s business district with heavy equipment while in Wood River, a father and son duo used a tractor for moving the drifted snow. In Shelton, traditional snow blowers and low-tech shovels were employed to carve paths through the heavy, wet snow.
