In the past week Centura’s boys basketball team spent a considerable amount of time on the road. First came a visit with the Mustangs at Sutton Tuesday, January 5, a trip that was followed by a journey to Gothenburg as guests of the Swedes on Saturday, the 9th.
Jose Escandon and Chance Yockey bested the competitors in their respective weight classes and finished in first place in those classes and helped the Gibbon wrestling team place third at the thirteen-team Franklin Invitational on Saturday, January 9.
Discounting the third period in Gibbon’s 14-point win at Shelton Tuesday, January 5, the visitors would still have won the game, but by just a threepoint margin. Since the two teams each scored 13 points in the fourth quarter, the 15-4 Gibbon blitz in that fateful third stanza created the lopsided final of 49-35.
On Wednesday, December 30, the Centurions hit the road to Newman Grove for their holiday invitational meet. Centura took ten wrestlers and finished in fifth place overall. The meet hosted 13 teams with Central City taking home the title.
“We played hard, but not very well,” said Coach Jeff Thober after his Lady Bulldogs got past Parkview Christian in the opening of the Silver Lake Holiday Tournament Wednesday, December 30. “We just didn’t run the offense very well,” added the coach after the 52-30 win.
