Graduation ceremonies at Wood River Rural High School are scheduled for Sunday, July 26, at 2:00 p.m. It will be determined prior to that time whether ceremonies will be held in person or virtually. Class colors are purple, black, and silver. The class song is “You’re Gonna Miss This” by Trace Adkins and the motto is “Let your dreams stay big and your worries stay small,” by Rascal Flatts. The class flowers are sunflowers and red roses.
Shelton high junior Jose Montanez has been chosen by Shelton American Legion Post #297 as its representative to the 2020 Cornhusker Boys State session and the Shelton American Auxiliary has chosen Emily Burr to attend the 2020 Cornhusker Girls State session with Trista Summers as the alternate. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Boys and Girls State Executive Boards have chosen to cancel the sessions for this year.
Ten teams, including the team from Shelton, competed in the Shelton Junior High Quiz Bowl held at the school on Wednesday, March 4. The Shelton team consisted of, left to right, Kaleb Roe, Erin Gegg, Justine Pope, Makayla Thornburg, Kyson Gilliand, and Callee Carman. Shelton’s top buzzer was Erin Gegg. Teams competing, in the order of their finish were, Grand Island Westridge (9-0), Kearney Catholic eighth grade, Holdrege, Kearney Catholic seventh grade, Wood River, Grand Island Walnut, Overton, Franklin, Grand Island Barr, and Shelton. The Shelton speech team traveled to Lawrence-Nelson on Wednesday, February 26, for the annual Twin Valley Conference meet, where they placed fourth as a team, overall.
The Gibbon speech team journeyed to the LouPlatte Conference meet on February 19 at Ord. The team placed fourth overall with one conference champion and several members earning medals.
