BRLD knocks Lady Eagles out of tourney

Having a Wood River girls’ team playing in the state basketball tournament for the first time in 31 years produced the understandable and typical community-wide week-long bubble of anticipation and excitement, only to have the Lady Wolverines from BRLD (Bancroft/Rosalie/Lyons/Decatur) burst that bubble with a 21-point win in the opening round of the state tourney game played Wednesday, March 3, in the gym of Lincoln’s Southeast High School. On the bright side, the 62-41 loss was just the third one in the Eagles’ season of 27 games. The Eagle ladies entered as the tourney’s number-two seed; BRLD was the seventh-seeded team of the state tournament’s eight teams.

The Wood River Lady Eagle basketball team earned a trip to the state tournament in Lincoln this week by winning the C2-10 Sub-district Tournament and the C2-2 District Final over South Loup, 62-43. Baylie Codner triumphantly displays the net after the Lady Eagles defeated South Loup. The Wood River girls played Bancroft-Rosalie-Lyons-Decatur on Wednesday, March 3, at Lincoln Southeast. The winner of that contest plays today (Thursday) at 8:30 p.m. at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln against either Ponca or GACC. See more on the Lady Eagles on Page 1B of this issue.
