Fire departments conduct rural wildfire drill
The three community volunteer fire departments of Cairo, Boelus, and Dannebrog combined their resources and personnel to conduct a rural wildfire drill recently. Two portable water tanks, each with a capacity of roughly 2,000 gallons, were established on a given route with pumpers providing stationary draft/ distribution (water to fire). Several large tanker trucks circled from the portables to a hydrant roughly 1/2 mile away, and refilled their trucks, thus completing a water supply loop, keeping the portables supplied. This simulation exercise of a wildfire blaze was valuable for all. It required teamwork, communication, and coordination of personnel and machinery to create an operation that could last for the duration of a blaze. Roughly 40 firefighters were involved to make the evening successful. (—courtesy photo)
