Gibbon recently selected for Communities for Kids initiative

The community of Gibbon was recently selected to be a part of the Communities for Kids (C4K) initiative with Early Futures Partnership. C4K is a multi-year planning and implementation initiative that was created in response to community requests for assistance with shortages of quality early care and education programs — shortages that both impact children’s optimal development and pose a challenge for communities hoping to attract and retain the viable workforce they need to thrive. The initiative is dedicated to ensuring that communities, primarily rural areas, can grow and prosper by strengthening and sustaining a quality early childhood care and education infrastructure.

CVFD holds burn ops training

The Cairo Volunteer Fire Department had a great turnout for their training held Tuesday, February 3. They worked on burn ops, which in this case, is setting up a wet line (water on whatever fuel they are working with), then burning up to the wet line with drip torches and flares. The idea is using fire to fight fire. The department would deploy this technique on rapidly growing, and hard to control fires, where they simply don’t have enough water or resources to stop it traditionally. This method is highly effective, but takes a lot of practice and understanding of fuel behaviors, tools used and positioning of trucks, and a typically hard to come by, degree of cooperation from Mother Nature. The firemen with the Cairo Volunteer Fire Department are working hard to make sure they have the knowledge necessary to stop any sort of fire!
