Shelton Area Lions Club holds annual food drive

Shelton's Food Pantry and Afterschool Backpack Program are once again replenished with donations from generous residents and volunteers. In an effort to serve those less fortunate, local Lions Club members and school students traveled door-to-door on Wednesday, October 11, collecting nonperishable food. The items were then organized for distribution at the Shelton United Methodist Church. Pictured above, left to right, are some of the many participants involved, Connie Rocker, Deb Rouse, Jeni Oliver, Lori Cornelius, Kari Willis, Nora Johnson, Kay Johnson, Knox Johnson, and Cindy Brandt. “Cooking safety starts with you. Pay attention to fire prevention.” is official theme for Fire Prevention Week

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA ) — the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week™ for more than 100 years — has announced “Cooking safety starts with you. Pay attention to fire prevention.™ ” as the theme for Fire Prevention Week, October 8-14, 2023. This year’s focus on cooking safety comes in response to NFPA’s latest cooking fire data, which shows that cooking remains by far the leading cause of U.S. home fires, with nearly half (49 percent) of all home fires involving cooking equipment; cooking is also the leading cause of home fire injuries and the second-leading cause of home fire deaths.

It’s harvest time in the Heartland

Combines, trucks, and tractors are becoming more and more prevalent across the region as harvest operations gain steam. Producers have taken advantage of recent warm, dry weather to get into their fields. Motorists should use caution when approaching harvest equipment on country roads as well as highways with the increase of harvest machinery moving from place to place.
