Long-time assistant librarian Tony Crouse recently became the librarian at the Shelton Public Library after the departure of Kathy Holley and looks forward to serving the community with the large selection of offerings of the library.
On display at the Gibbon Heritage Center is the brass/nickle plated cash register once used by S. A. A. Walker, the father of Leroy Walker, both of whom operated Walker Hardware in Gibbon for many years. The register is a 1913 National Cash Register model with one full drawer and two one-half drawers. Shelton High senior Jose Montanez recently composed the winning essay for both the local and district Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) district Voice of Democracy contest and received his award at a ceremony held at Shelton High School on Wednesday, January 20. This year’s theme was “Is This The Country Our Founders Envisioned?” Shelton junior Taylor Lewis received third place in the Voice of Democracy contest and seventh grader Erin Gegg received a second place award at the ceremony in the Kearney VFW Post 759 Patriot’s Pen contest.
Gibbon Public Library assistant director Paige Schmidt and youth librarian Annie Taylor, recently completed the Public Librarian Certification Program through the Nebraska Library Commission. “I’m super proud of them,” stated library director Missy Onate.
The City of Gibbon is planning to celebrate its Sesquicentennial on April 7, and the 150th Celebration Committee recently unveiled its logo that will be used throughout this monumental year as well as the celebration’s theme, “With pride in our history, we move toward our future.”
