Shelton’s track and field teams kept busy last week as they took part in the Heartland Invitational held on Tuesday, April 15, and then hosted the Shelton Invitational on Thursday, April 17.
The Wood River boys and girls track and field teams made respectable showings when they participated in the Shelton Invitational held on Thursday, April 17. The Eagle boys built up 82.5 team points to finish the day in fourth place among the nine teams attending with the Central Valley team taking first place with 124.50 team points. The Elm Creek ladies won the girls portion of the meet with 129 points. The Lady Eagles were seventh among the nine teams competing with 82.50 points.
The Lady Buffalo 4 X 800 meter relay team posted a first place finish at the Ravenna Invitational on Thursday, April 17, to record the highest finish for both the Gibbon girls and boys track and field teams on the day. As a team, the Gibbon ladies placed fifth with 50 points while the Doniphan/ Trumbull team scored 165 points to win the seven team girls side of the meet. The Buffalo boys finished the day with 42 points as Axtell won the boys portion of the day with 102 points.
Gibbon’s Tyler Weismann fired a score of 74 to lead the Gibbon golf team at the Red Cloud Invitational on Thursday, April 17, and earned first place individually. As a team, the Buffaloes posted a team score of 389 for tenth place among the 14 teams taking part in the meet. Deshler won the meet with a team score of 341.
During Gibbon School’s High Ability Learner sponsor Angie Brown’s WIN class, which is composed of High Ability Learners, using the Design Thinking Model, students created projects that solve problems. Two of the groups chose community service. The first group (at right), whose members are, left to right, DaRey Aldaba and Jaxton Swarm, held a class contest to raise money for Children’s Hospital in Omaha. They raised $312.04. The second group (above), whose members were, left to right, Julia Kluever, Andrea Magana, Olivia Piper, Lillyan Schmidt and Katie Flores, conducted two bake sales, which earned over $300. They then contacted Crossroads Mission, the homeless shelter in Kearney, and asked them what items would be of help to them. With list in hand, the girls shopped for the items, delivered them to the shelter, and toured the shelter, learning of its programs. “To say that I am proud of these young people is an understatement,” Mrs. Brown said.
