Events for 150th Anniversary of the Soldiers Free Homestead Colony to begin April 7

Events to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Soldiers Free Homestead Colony in Gibbon are being made beginning with the kickoff event set for Wednesday, April 7. The arrival of the colonists on April 7, 1871, will be remembered at an open house at the Gibbon Heritage Center beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Vohland is epitome of a volunteer

Living and working in close proximity to the fire hall has allowed Gibbon Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department member Lee Vohland to be either the first or second department member to report to the fire hall on his more than four thousand trips to a hospital in his sixty years serving on the department.

Shelton VFD hosting drive through/take out pancake feed and raffle

The Shelton Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department invites one and all to its drive through/take out pancake feed slated to be held Saturday, March 13, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Shelton Fire Hall. Delivery within the Shelton department’s fire district is available upon request. Proceeds will go toward new radios and rescue equipment. There will be a free will offering taken.

GVFD hosts flood mitigation clean up on the Wood River

Members of the Gibbon Volunteer Fire Department and about thirty volunteers cleared a portion of the Wood River in the northeast corner of Gibbon last Saturday as part of ongoing efforts to mitigate flooding along the river. Gibbon Fire Chief Rick Brown said that the area cleared of trees and debris beginning at the bridge on Murnen Avenue and east to the city shop. Chief Brown explained that the department plans to do more clearing along the river this Saturday, March 13, weather permitting. Volunteers interested in helping may meet at the fire hall at 8:00 a.m.
