U.S. Honor Flag stops at Gibbon’s Windmill State Recreation Area
The U.S. Honor Flag and its caretakers, retired Fairfax County fire and rescue lieutenant Phil Devereaux and retired Grand Junction, Colorado, police officer Cindy Heisler, made a stop on their cross country trek for supper at Buffalo Chipz and an overnight stay at Windmill State Recreation Area south of Gibbon on Tuesday, July 13. The bike ride will ultimately cover 3,700 miles beginning in Blaine, Washington, to raise at least $100,000 for four different charities, The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, Concerns of Police Survivors, Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, and the Honor Network. Pictured are, left to right, Cindy Heisler, local retired firefighter Don Ash, and Phil Devereaux. The U.S. Honor Flag’s origins began shortly after the September 11, 2001, attacks. The flag traveled with Chris as he led the largest convoy of first responders in United States history to Ground Zero. The flag briefly flew over the rubble and Heisler was encouraged by a survivor to keep the flag and continue to inspire Americans. Heisler brought the flag with him as he served in the U.S. Army in Iraq and Afghanistan and upon his return, the U.S. Honor Flag began its mission to travel the country and honor fallen heroes.
