On September 13, a large wildfire broke out five miles southwest of Crawford. The fire quickly grew into a large event that required requests on a state level. Recently, several members of the Gibbon Volunteer Fire Department volunteered to aid firefighters already fighting the blaze.

Shelton’s Sammie (Resh) Gdowski was one of 20 individuals inducted into the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame in Lincoln last weekend. The 1985 Shelton High graduate was undefeated in the 1,600 meter and 3,200 meter runs all four of her high school years and set a state Class C record by breaking the 11-minute mark. During her senior year she joined the cross country team and took the gold medal at the state meet. After high school she ran for the Huskers where she was a seven-time All-American in track and cross country. The six-time Big Eight Conference track champion still has her name on the Huskers’ school record lists in six events. During the years 1990-1996 she competed for Reebock and was ranked in the Top 20 in the world in the 3,000 meter run. (—courtesy photos)
