Faith Young joined the department six years ago. She works as a bus driver and paraprofessional in the Wood River School system. She is married to her husband Chris (also a WRFD member). They have a blended family of nine children (four sons and two daughters of hers and one son and two daughters of Chris’). They also have four grandsons and two granddaughters. Their farm south of Wood River has numerous furkids, including a cow, donkey, pony and several dogs and cats. She joined six months after moving to Wood River because she wanted to get to know the people in the community, and helping them in their times of need was a great way to do that. She enjoys the new challenges she faces with every call and learning the new skills at monthly training. One of her most memorable calls was when their own house caught fire in 2018 and of course the floods of 2019. Another was when she got to fly up to Wisconsin to drive back a new fire truck. Some of her biggest challenges are working calls on the Interstate. “It is so dangerous. We have to be so careful when we are on calls there because most people don’t slow down and aren’t paying attention.” Her advice for anyone considering being part of a fire department is to be openminded, have a willingness to learn, and use constructive criticism to get better at what you’re doing.

Gibbon Head Start celebrated “Week of the Young Child” last week by having a rally in downtown Gibbon. They marched downtown chanting “Kids are Number 1” and stopped at several businesses to sing a song called “I Am Special.” Businesses and patrons enjoyed the children’s visits and the rally. Gibbon Head Start is a comprehensive family program for income eligible preschool children. They are now taking applications for the 2022-2023 school year. The Gibbon American Legion will hold an Easter Egg Hunt this Saturday, April 16, at the northeast end of Davis Park beginning at 1:00 p.m.
