Eagle track and field teams compete at Merrick County, Aurora invitationals

The opening meet of the season for the Wood River boys and girls track and field teams, the Merrick County Invitational in Central City on Tuesday, March 25, proved to be a successful venture as both teams returned home with a number of medal winners. The Wood River teams traveled to the Aurora Invitational on Friday, March 28.

Centura Powerlifting team earns Class D state title

The Centura Boys Powerlifting team claimed the Class D State Championship once more on Saturday, March 22, narrowly defeating Niobrara/Verdigre by a score of 67 to 64. Last year, Centura also earned a state championship by defeating the Cougars, 51 to 44. All twelve Centura lifters placed in the top six of their respective weight classes. The team was led by three state champions; Isaac Frankforter (at 114 pounds), Gavin Whitefoot (275 pounds), and Jace Campbell (heavyweight). Other medalists included Jace Aguilar-Rodriguez (third at 148 pounds), Mason Janda (second at 181 pounds), Alex Solis (third at 198 pounds), Cole Mackey (fifth at 220 pounds), Wyatt Linder (third at 242 pounds), Sethe Grimes (second at 275 pounds), Kolten Simons (heavyweight, second place) and Corbin Burgess (sixth place at 181 pounds). In the junior high competition, Jax Campbell took first place in his 275 pound division. “Every lifter set personal bests, and Frankforter and Campbell also set school records,” said Jerry Nott, Centura powerlifting coach. “Centura can be proud of these students athletes for their hard work, sportsmanship, and the positive example they set at the meet. Bulldog track and field teams compete at Sutton

“It was nice to get back at it for our first meet after the indoor invite was canceled last week,” said Shelton head track coach Matt Walter of the Bulldog boys and girls teams taking part in the Sutton Invitational on Tuesday, March 25. “It ended up being a really nice day.” Heartland won the boys’ side of the meet with 136.5 team points. The Bulldogs finished the day with 38 team points. The Shelton ladies scored 26 points at the Sutton Invitational as Osceola won the women’s part of the meet with 108 team points.
