By taking three of four sets from Nebraska Christian on the Shelton home court, the Lady Bulldog volleyball team got the season off to a winning start by grounding the Lady Eagles, 25-14, 20-25, 25-23 and 25-18, on Thursday, August 29, and then competed at the Overton Tournament on Saturday, August 31.
The season got off to a good start for the Gibbon Buffaloes on the gridiron as they posted a 17-14, come from behind victory over the visiting Hershey Panthers on Friday, August 30.
“The first race of the year is always tough,” stated Wood River head cross country coach Matt Cantrell of the Grand Island Northwest Invitational on Friday, August 30. “You don’t know exactly where you are at fitness-wise and newbies to the sport find it difficult stepping into the racing environment for the first time. On the bus ride and in camp there were a lot of nerves from the athletes. Comments like, ‘can I just quit now,’ and ‘do we really have to do this’ were heard. But yet every runner pushed through the fear to race and I am so proud of each one.”
Wood River’s Lady Eagle netters took three sets from Arcadia/Loup City on the court on Thursday, August 29, and finished in fourth place at the Centennial Tournament on Saturday, August 31.
After leading for three quarters in the opening game of the season, the Shelton Bulldog football team saw the Silver Lake Mustangs sneak past them in the fourth quarter for a narrow win, 13-12.
