Wood River school receives WRCCF grant for nursing assistant course

Last September, the Wood River School District was the recipient of a $2,000 grant from the Wood River Community Centennial Foundation (WRCCF) to go toward the recently started nursing assistant course at the high school. School nurse Shelby Allan explained that the grant money was used to purchase two mannequins, Barbara and Gale, that nursing assistant students use to practice skills such as bathing, dressing, feeding, moving a subject to a wheelchair or shower and more. She said that anything students would do in a nursing home/hospital setting can be practiced with the mannequins. The nursing assistant course is offered through Central Community College and is a dual credit course, according to Allan. Students are in class for four hours per day every Wednesday, which allows them to reach the number of hours required by the state to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. Allan said that, currently, there are three students taking the class and in the future, as many as six could take the course. “This is a great opportunity for students because the class is offered at a discounted rate,” Allan said. “They get to do it during school hours instead of on their own time, and once the course is completed and they pass their test, they will be able to work in many different locations as a nursing assistant. We plan to offer the class every spring.” Pictured, left to right are, WRCCF members Kay Doane and Kim Canfield, Wood River School Nurse Shelby Allan, WRCCF members Blanca Rodriguez, Peg Krause and Jason Rotter, and Wood River Superintendent Terry Zessin.
