Clipper Country area school bands participated in the 79th annual Harvest of Harmony Parade on Saturday, October 2, in Grand Island. Schools participating were Wood River Rural, Shelton, Gibbon, and Centura. Wood River’s Harvest of Harmon Queen Candidate Faith Parlin, at right, participated in pageant activities Friday night and led the Wood River band along the parade route.
Local history came to life courtesy of the Beyond The Grave event held at Gibbon’s Riverside Cemetery and sponsored by the Buffalo County Historical Society (BCHS)-Trails and Rails Museum and Gibbon Heritage Center on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 1, 2 and 3, as part of the celebration of the 150th anniversary of Gibbon’s founding. The family friendly event featured stories of those pioneers who impacted the founding and success of the community in the early years. “The program went very well,” stated Broc Anderson, Community Engagement Director of the BCHS. “BCHS and the Gibbon Heritage Center couldn’t be happier about the turnout and the quality of the program.” Attendees listened to Ken and Lynn Schafer speaking about and impersonating William and Dina Nutter at their graves (above) and Gibbon resident Karl Borden impersonated Samuel Bassett (below). A tree-planting event was held on Sunday, October 3, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wood River. Father Jonathan Sorensen wrote a grant to the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum (NSA) and the church was the recipient of ten trees. Barry Burrow, the president of the Grand Island Tree Board, provided education on and a demonstration of planting trees, after which the children from the St. Mary’s religious education classes (and other volunteers) helped to plant the trees in the public rightof-way all along Dodd Street and West 11th Street. An NSA press release said, “‘Free Trees for Fall Planting” is supported by the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum’s Trees for Nebraska Towns Initiative, funded by the Nebraska Environmental Trust, and a U.S. Forest Service Landscape Scale Restoration grant received by the Nebraska Forest Service.” (–courtesy photos)
