Connor-Benson Post #314 American Legion conducts services

Members of Wood River Connor-Benson Post #314 American Legion Honor Guard conducted several Memorial Day services on Monday, May 30. Services were conducted at the Wood River Legion, Wood River Catholic Cemetery, and Cameron Cemetery with Mother Nature providing the wind, cloud cover and cool temperatures. Memorial Day, as Decoration Day ultimately came to be known, originally honored only those lost while fighting in the Civil War. Over the years, the holiday evolved to commemorate those who died in other conflicts, including both World Wars, the Korean conflict, Vietnam and American’s more recent conflicts. A “mini” Shelton High School alumni gathering was held on Monday, May 16, 2022, at noon at Valentino’s in Kearney. There were 19 former graduates and their spouses and guests present. The 70 year class, due to COVID, had not been able to celebrate this special year for a few years now. The classes of 1950, 1951, and 1952 were honored. Other classes with members present were 1955, 1977, and 1978. After enjoying lunch, those in attendance drove across town to Brookstone Apartments where they joined Doran and Pat Post for more memory sharing and also to celebrate the reunion of the 1952 SHS Homecoming King and Queen, Doran Post and Ioma Gumprecht Reese. They had not seen each other in the 70 years in between.
