The community of Gibbon has a long history of celebrating Independence Day and according to research by local historian Jean Widdowson, Gibbon held the first such celebration in Buffalo County in 1871 at the area of the Boyd Ranch west of town, just months after arriving in the area. In 1872, a long running tradition of holding a July 4 dance began and when Davis Park was established, the Independence Day celebration included “refreshment booths” located around the park, similar to today’s food trucks.
Fifty years ago on July 11, 1976, about 100 persons gathered at the northwest corner of the Gibbon Heritage Center property at noon for the burial of a time capsule provided by the Gibbon/Shelton Senior Center with the intent of unearthing it and opening it fifty years later.
Darryl and Denise Volquardsen were selected as June’s Yard of the Month Award winners by the Gibbon Beautification Foundation. Winners of the Yard of the Month are spotlighted on the City of Gibbon and Gibbon Beautification Foundation Facebook pages, recognized in the pages of The Clipper newspaper, and receive a Yard of the Month sign in their yard for a month. The Gibbon Beautification Foundation launched the new recognition program for the continued dedication to beautifying the Gibbon community. Residents may submit yard nominations for Yard of the Month from the first through the 15th of each month, through the month of October. There will be a new winner each month. Nomination addresses can be submitted along with an optional photo to yardsofgibbon@gmail.com. The Gibbon Beautification Foundation encourages all Gibbon residents to participate and aid in recognizing the outstanding properties and landscaping efforts throughout the community.
