The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA ) — the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week™ for more than 100 years — has announced “Cooking safety starts with you. Pay attention to fire prevention.™ ” as the theme for Fire Prevention Week, October 8-14, 2023. This year’s focus on cooking safety comes in response to NFPA’s latest cooking fire data, which shows that cooking remains by far the leading cause of U.S. home fires, with nearly half (49 percent) of all home fires involving cooking equipment; cooking is also the leading cause of home fire injuries and the second-leading cause of home fire deaths.
Combines, trucks, and tractors are becoming more and more prevalent across the region as harvest operations gain steam. Producers have taken advantage of recent warm, dry weather to get into their fields. Motorists should use caution when approaching harvest equipment on country roads as well as highways with the increase of harvest machinery moving from place to place.
Celebrate Wood River’s second Saturday Friendship Gathering is scheduled for this Saturday, October 14, at 9:30 a.m. at the Wood River Performing Arts Center at Wood River Rural High School. Featured speaker will be Audubon’s Rowe Sanctuary Naturalist Anne Troyer Winkel.
