Eagle ladies add to win streak, claim Runza Holiday Tourney title

By eight points, 63-55, Wood River’s Lady Eagles sidestepped Central City as part of the Runza Holiday Tournament in Central City Monday, December 28, then claimed the tournament championship trophy by doing the same to Cross County by five, 51-46, two nights later. The victories stretch the current string of wins to six, making the overall record stand at 8-1.

Any specifics regarding team or individual statistics and details in the Central City game were not made available. However, in the championship game Cross County (Stromsburg) “won” the final three quarters, 39-36, making Wood River’s jumping to a 15-7 lead at the end of the first quarter loom very large in the win. The Cougars crawled back into it with a two-point second-quarter edge, 12-10, and the teams played to a tie of 14 points in the third quarter, leaving the board showing a three-point difference, 39-36, as the final period began. Cross County gained just a point, 13-12, leaving the lead in the hands of the Eagles with the 51-46 final.
