Eagle boys nip Bobcats, but Haymakers win close one
Wood River trekked to Blue Hill Friday, December 18, and came home with a one-point, 50-49 win. That victory, however, was offset as Cozad’s Haymakers got by with a 49-46 win in the opening round of the Runza Holiday Tournament that will end in Central City.
The persistent Eagles stayed the course at Blue Hill, battling the whole way through a deficit that kept gradually shrinking, a deficit that finally disappeared in the game’s waning seconds. A Blue Hill 14-12 firstquarter edge swelled to a 28-22 advantage as the first half ended, but Wood River’s 18-13 third period set up the drama to come in the final period. In that one the hosts were held to a single-digit quarter of eight while the Eagles took care of business, ending with 10 finalperiod points, netting the win by one point, 50-49.
Aiden Graves took game-high scoring honors with 19. Caleb Paulk managed a double-figure total of 10, and Cayleb Stewart and Easton Graves each netted seven. Austin Buettner added five, and the two by Josh Luehr helped to make the difference. No other statistical information was made available.
