Bulldog boys runners-up, girls seventh at Gibbon
Gibbon’s Ron Priebe cross country meet Thursday, September 5, a meet that involved 16 teams, 56 girls, and 121 boys, had Shelton’s Bulldog boys nabbing the runner-up trophy and the girls getting a top-ten finish with their 120, enough points to end in seventh place.
The course, noted for its overall difficulty, was made more challenging by the high temperature. “As usual, the heat took over the course and the day,” said Coach Matt Walter. “Even though I think it affected us, it can’t be an excuse for any of our finishes since all the other runners out there had to run in the heat as well.”
The boys’ team was led by three medalists. Ry Cheney and Angel Lehn finished stride for stride with each other, having less than half-a-second separating their 11th and 12th-place finishes with their respective 20:22.76 and 20:26.72. Steven Snyder’s 20:47.87 earned the medal for 15th place, coming in just a fraction ahead of Xavier Hellerich’s 16th-place time of 21:00.53. Hellerich drew notice from his coach. “He competed well and didn’t let the elements affect him,” was Coach Walter’s view of the freshman.
