Leading the FUN
Dale and Georgene Smidt will ride in the 2019 Wood River FunFest parade as Grand Marshals. The couple have resided in Wood River since 1966 when Dale began teaching math and coaching cross country and basketball at Wood River Rural High School.
Georgene grew up in Wilcox, south of Kearney, and Dale in Trumbull. The two met when Dale taught school there. They were married in Wilcox in 1963. The rest, as they say, is history.
The Smidts related that, when Dale first accepted a teaching position at Wood River Rural High, Georene said that she thought they would only stay in the community for a year, Dale remembers thinking three years. Mrs. Smidt said her first impression of Wood River was before there were paved streets, it was during the spring and no leaves on the trees and it was tough to find somewhere to live. “There was nothing very positive at that time,” she said. Dale taught for 40 years, thirty-plus at Wood River.
