District 27 school house and picnics remembered
It has been over fifty years now since the District 27 school house approximately two miles west and three miles south of Wood River had its final annual school picnic and closed its doors forever after nearly a century of educating area students. Financial struggles were a key factor in the closing and consolidation with the District 8 school, according to a story printed in the May 15, 1969, Wood River Sunbeam by Sunny Welch.
At the final annual picnic held by staff and students in May of 1969, memories of throwing coal dust on the fire when students wanted to get out of school and of the tornado that hit one and a-half miles north of the school were related. The number of such memories held by students, their parents and teachers over the years must be infinite.
