Rexey “Rex” Allen Gunnerson

Rexey “Rex” Allen Gunnerson, age 83, of St. Paul, formerly of Gothenburg, passed away peacefully on December 1, 2023, surrounded by his family at the Grand Island Regional Medical Center in Grand Island.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, December 8, 2023, at the United Methodist Church in St. Paul. Pastor Susan Murithi will be officiating. Interment will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Friday at the Gothenburg Cemetery in Gothenburg. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be designated to Parkinson’s research.

Rex was born on December 7, 1939, to Carl and Mabel (Willett) Gunnerson in Bertrand.

He grew up in Cozad, and graduated from Cozad High School in 1959.

Rex was united in marriage to Inez Williams on April 3, 1960, in Gothenburg. From this union four children were born, Valerie, Machell, Stewart, and Patricia.

Rex entered the United States Air Force on January 16, 1962, and was honorably discharged on January 14, 1966. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Gothenburg Volunteer Fire Department.

Rex retired from Federal Civil Service with the Marine Corp Air-Ground Combat Center in Twenty-nine Palms, California.

He enjoyed woodworking, golfing, writing historical novels, and fishing. His greatest enjoyment in life was spending time with his family.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 63 years, Inez Gunnerson, of St.

Paul; daughter and son-inlaw, Valerie and Jerry Knapp, of Lincoln; daughter and son-in-law, Machell and Kent Naylor, of St. Paul; son and daughter-in-law, Stewart and Daphne Gunnerson, of Ankeny, Iowa; daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Jeff McWhorter, of Loveland, Colorado; grandchildren, Kelly, Ryan, Crysta, Nicole, Laurel, Gavin, and Wade; and great-grandson, Callan.

Rex was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Mabel Gunnerson; brothers, Gilbert Wayne, Robert Laverne, Larry Lee; father and mother-in-law, Sidney and Hazel Williams; sister-in-law, Marye Franzen.
