Gene Ray Conroy

Gene Ray Conroy, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on the morning of October 21, 2026, at the age of 75.

Gene was born on May 14, 1951, in Kearney. He cherished memories of catching fireflies on summer evenings, chasing crawdads in the south channel of the Platte River, and searching for arrowheads along the Wood River.

Gene served in the United States Army from 1971 to 1973. His working life included teaching history and English and a career with the United States Postal Service.

On May 21, 1977, Gene married his sweetheart, Elizabeth Nuncio. For 49 years, they shared a life, a family, and countless memories. She was his sweetheart then, and she remained his sweetheart through their nearly five decades together.

Gene traveled the world and visited all 50 states. Yet some of his greatest joys were found right at home. He had a passion for gardening, growing vegetables and beautiful flowers. His family will forever think of him whenever they see something beautiful growing.

To his grandchildren, Gene was “Pocky,” and time spent together was one of his greatest joys. Whether they were playing outside, hiking a trail, or sharing a sweet treat, he treasured those moments. Pocky believed there was no problem that couldn’t be solved over a big bowl of ice cream.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Elizabeth; his daughter, Devon Conroy; his son, Andrew Conroy; his daughter, Julie Conroy; his sister, Gail Jones; and his grandchildren, Aiden Fulcher, Ethan Fulcher, Abigail Conroy, and Emma Conroy. They will carry his memory with them always.

Gene was preceded in death by his father, Lee Frank Conroy; his mother, Estella May Conroy; and his brother, Gary Conroy.
