Gene was born in Kearney and was the son of the late Leland and Wanda Gangwish.
An extrovert by nature, Gene energetically showered his love on family and friends. He effortlessly lit up any gathering with his cheerful and genuine interest in others. He had an uncanny ability to strike up conversations with strangers, making everyone feel valued in his presence.
Christian faith was at the core of Gene’s generosity of spirit. He often shared his unwavering belief that “God has a plan” to those needing comfort at life’s intersections.
He was an active member of Faith Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, Shipoke Neighborhood Association, and the Alpha Gama Rho Fraternity.
Beginning as a young man and continuing to his last year, Gene traveled the globe. He explored the world with visits to every continent save Antarctica. He once spent a month in Nigeria with a Rotary exchange program, representing farmers from the U.S.
Gene’s professional career as an agricultural consultant included residencies in four U.S. states in the Midwest and on both coasts. He worked for others while he nurtured his entrepreneurial drive by starting his own ventures and successful investment projects.
His last employment was with Nutrien Ag Solutions, where he retired after 20 years as a senior proprietary products manager.
When he wasn’t working, Gene could be found planting flowers and fixing, building or painting houses. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed years of hunting and fly fishing. He loved baking and canning.
He turned his passion for making pies into fundraisers for his church and his passion for canning jams into wedding favors for his daughter.
Gene will be missed by his beloved wife of 50 years, Carol J.
