Doris Louise Gangwish

Doris Louise Gangwish, age 93, of Kearney, passed away Monday, May 23, 2022, at Mt. Carmel Keens Memorial Home in Kearney. A Celebration of Life service was held Tuesday, May 31, 2022, at First Baptist Church of Kearney with Pastor Sean Dougherty officiating. Interment will follow at a later date.

Memorial gifts in her honor can be made to First Baptist Church of Kearney or Ottawa University of Ottawa, Kansas. Condolences may be shared online at www.osrfh.com. Services are entrusted to O’Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral and Cremation Services.

Doris Louise Thyr was born March 26, 1929, in Kansas City, Kansas, to Carl and Pearl (Byler) Thyr. She grew up in Kansas City, Kansas, and graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1947. She then attended Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas, graduating in 1954. While at Ottawa she met Carl Gangwish, Jr., of Shelton, and they were married December 18, 1954. After Carl’s graduation they moved to Shelton and started a life on the farm.

Louise was a member of Gibbon Baptist Church, and later First Baptist Church, Kearney. She was active in Extension Club, International Visitors Council, and was an active and involved alumnus of Ottawa University. She lovingly welcomed international students to the home, and stayed in close communication with many friends. She was an accomplished seamstress and cook, sharing generous hospitality with family, friends and guests. She and Carl traveled extensively worldwide, and they enjoyed spending winters in Sedona, Arizona. She was fiercely proud of her Swedish heritage and her Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Louise is survived by her husband of 67 years, Carl Gangwish, of Kearney; daughter, Karla (Tim) Dye, of Summerfield, North Carolina; sons, Dan (Debbie) Gangwish, of Boulder, Colorado, and Joel Gangwish, of Buckeye, Arizona; and grandchildren, Thyra and Kirsten Dye and Brent and Renee Gangwish.
