Born on September 20, 1953, in Greeley, Colorado, Gary was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and a friend to many. After growing up working on his family’s dairy farm in Hudson, Colorado, he moved his family to St. Ansgar, Iowa, in 1982 where he began farming before beginning work in carpentry. In 1993, he moved his family to Gibbon, where he started his own construction company, Rafter GB Construction. His work in carpentry wasn’t just a means of income, it was his way to teach his sons the value of hard work and the importance of treating people right.
While his retirement was short, it gave him the opportunity to reconnect with his life-long joy. Always a cowboy at heart, Gary loved working with cattle and greatly enjoyed the opportunity that a new friendship provided him … working cattle in the open Sandhills north of Burwell on the Broweleit Ranch, a passion he enjoyed sharing with his grandsons, Riley and Reid.
Gary also enjoyed leatherworking, trapshooting, and fishing with his grandkids at Calamus Reservoir.
Gary is survived by his wife of 45 years, Kathreen Bergstrom; his sister, Jenny Cummings, of Hudson, Colorado; his children, Gary Bergstrom Jr. (Jennifer), of Lincoln, Kacey Bergstrom (Shanna), of Gibbon, and Cody Bergstrom, of Kearney; and his four grandchildren, Riley, Reid, Kristiana, and Garrett. Chelsie Bergstrom, of Gibbon, was also close to Gary’s heart.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Deloris Bergstrom, of Hudson, Colorado.
