Larry Bombeck
Larry Bombeck, age 84, of Grand Island, died Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at CHI Health – Bergan Mercy, Omaha. Services were held Tuesday, September 9, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grand Island. Reverend Adam Snoberger officiated. Burial followed at the Kenesaw Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation.
Larry was born on May 31, 1941, in Hugo, Colorado, to Kenneth and Bessie (Elliot) Bombeck. He spent most of his childhood in Shelton, graduating from Shelton High School in 1959. In 1963, he was united in marriage to Jeanette Brittin, raising two daughters and a son before divorcing in 2003. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. He was also elected to the Shelton Village Board from 1984-1993, while serving as the mayor from 1990-1993.
Larry had an entrepreneurial spirit, opening the L&M Standard Station and Garage in Shelton. He later purchased Platte Valley Propane in Wood River, servicing the Wood River/Shelton area for 24 years. He also served on the Nebraska LP Gas Association board from 1981-1994 and as president of the association from 1991-1993.
After Larry retired, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Lindner in 2006, living in Grand Island, where he was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and a member of the choir for a few years.
He loved spending time with family and friends, playing cards, deer hunting, and back country Canadian fishing. He loved watching his children and grandchildren compete in sports, especially in basketball.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; daughters, Kim (Pat) Hannon, of Valley, and Karla Schnacker, of Hastings; son, Kevin Bombeck (Ashley Sheckler), of Hastings; stepson, Brent (Michelle) Lindner, of Grand Island; and stepdaughter, Jodi Schwieger of Overland Park, Kansas.
He also had eight grandchildren, Krista (Damien) Cullen, Kelsey (Jon) Chittenden, Kara (Lucas) Kasson, Zach (Chelsey) Schnacker, Kyle (Aleisha) Schnacker, Ben (Kristen Mackeprang) Bombeck, Riley Bombeck, and Morgan Sheckler; step-grandchildren, Sydney Lindner, Cole Lindner, Cade Schwieger, Cooper Schwieger and Carson Schwieger; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Ivan Bombeck, of Kearney; and a sister-in-law, Janet Bombeck, of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Don Bombeck.
Larry will be remembered for his strong faith, quick-witted humor, entrepreneurial spirit, and the love he had for his family.
