Gibbon girls look to compete in rebuilding season

Gibbon head girls basketball coach Jim Martenson will field a squad in 2018-19 that was hit hard by graduation, losing six starters or experienced players from the 10-12 team last season. “We will be looking at a rebuilding year this season,” said coach Martenson. “We lost nine seniors through graduation that did most of the playing as starters and substitutes for us last season. Lack of size on the team this season along with the youth of our players will be a challenging factor this season.” Despite the challenges, coach Martenson remains upbeat about his team, “This set of girls brings a very positive attitude to the team and playing court. When looking at the fact that we will be a young team, we should have some depth to look at in playing potential, and we should demonstrate some positive quickness with our perimeter players we will have on the court. We are again looking at the opportunity to challenge and continue our growth for a more positive finish in the LouPlatte Conference.” “We gained confidence with a positive season last year in the learning process of our system and carried it forward with a positive summer effort together as a team,” continued coach Martenson. “We look to have positive depth on the team, but will need players to accept their roles on the team to reach desired goals/expectations for the season as a group.” Looking ahead to the competition the Lady Buffaloes will encounter this season coach Martenson related, “We play in a tough conference (LouPlatte), and also have a very solid nonconference schedule that will force us to work and play the game to the best of our ability each and every day at practice and in games.” “I’m looking for a positive opportunity working with these players in their third year in my program to accept their roles, and to reach positive goals for our schedule and season,” said coach Martenson. “We will be looking to improve each and every day in practice and when we take the court in game competition and will strive to be better at the end of the season by working to improve every day leading through the season.” The Lady Buffaloes return a number of junior letterwinners from last season including Baylee Rockefeller, Jade Bentley, Kaylee Palmieri, Abby Christensen, and Claire Kee, and sophomore Yahyda Casteneda. Also suiting up for the Lady Buffaloes will be senior Avigail Corona; juniors Marina Escobar and Arlet Nava; sophomores Dominique Alvarenga, Samantha Walker, Jalyssa Gillming, Kylee Brown, Gelsey Rivas, Desirae Nunez, Alissa Bailey, Daniela Corona, and Anahi Escandon; and freshmen Destiny Nunez, Jennifer Diaz-Herrera, Aleah Onate, Andrea Ramirez- Aguilar, Elizabeth Murillo-Corona, and Lindsey Wilkens. Coach Martenson will be assisted this season by coaches Chelsey Jacobitz and Vanessa Resh.
