James R. “Jim” Applegate, age 85, of Gibbon, died Sunday, June 17, at CHI Health Good Samaritan Hospital. A memorial service was held Friday, June 22, at the Gibbon Baptist Church. The Reverend Mike Evans officiated. Inurnment was at the Riverside Cemetery in Gibbon. Military honors were provided by the Gibbon American Legion Post #310 and the Nebraska National Guard Honors Team. Memorials are suggested to the Gibbon Volunteer Fire Department. Jim was born June 10, 1933, in Kearney to E.M. and Helen (Grow) Applegate. He was raised on a farm in the Gibbon area. He attended country school and then graduated from Gibbon High School in 1950. Jim was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Germany during the Korean War. While there, he met his future wife, Regia Marie Steger. On November 12, 1955, they were united in marriage in Gibbon. He farmed in the Gibbon area until his retirement. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Regia, of Gibbon; son, Scott Applegate and wife Janis, of Gibbon; granddaughter, Sarah Jennifer Applegate, of Lincoln; and nephew, John Kindervag, of Coppell, Texas. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Joyce Kindervag.
