David M. Metz
David M. “Red” Metz, age 93, of Kearney, died Tuesday, May 8, 2018, at Mt. Carmel Home. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 12, at O’Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Home. The Reverend Dean Pofahl officiated. Memorials are suggested to the family for future designation. Condolences may be shared online at www.osrfh.com. David was born on September 9, 1924, in Pleasanton to Benjamin Franklin and Suzie Maude (Philips) Metz. He grew up and received his education in Pleasanton. He was united in marriage to Eileen E. Reese on May 2, 1953, in Grand Island. To this union three children were born: Conner, Susan, and Howard. The couple made their home in Grand Island where David worked for the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant. They later lived in Gibbon, Wood River, and Kearney while he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. David retired from Union Pacific 1986 after 32 years. In retirement, David and Eileen loved to travel and work in their yard together. He also enjoyed fishing, repairing old clocks, woodworking, and watching movies and baseball on television. Survivors include his children, Susan E. Rogers, of Axtell, and Howard Metz, of Kenesaw; his grandchildren, Belinda Goodsel, of Junction City, Kansas, Robert Metz, of Hastings, Karen Rennick and husband Tyler, of Hastings, and Brian McDonald, of Broomfield, Colorado; his great-grandchildren, Kara, Jennifer, Aries, Zoey, Dylan, and Lillyana; and numerous nieces and nephews. David was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a son, Conner S. Metz; and nine siblings.
