William “Bill” O’Brien

William “Bill” O’Brien, age 82, formerly of Shelton, passed away Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan, Kansas. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Thursday, December 28, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelton. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery near Wood River. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Bill was born December 4, 1941, in Kearney to William O’Brien Sr. and Doris (Lange) O’Brien. He was raised in Shelton and attended Shelton High School. On December 26, 1982, Bill was united in marriage to Delores in Grand Island. Bill was an employee of Cargill Ag Horizon, retiring after 23 years with the company. Bill and Delores moved to Kansas in 2019 to be closer to family.

Bill was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was a former member of Platt-Duetsche Society and the Eagle’s Club.

Left to cherish his memory are his step-children, Laura Kellogg, of Caney, Kansas, Sam (Trina) Reed, of Caney, Kansas, and Carrie Reed, of Joplin, Missouri; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Jim (Carol) O’Brien, of Loup City; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Delores O’Brien; brother, Laverne O’Brien; and sisters, Verna Flynn and Dolores Plante.
