Legion Seniors claim state championship

In a winner-take-all game Wednesday night, July 31, at Hebron Shelton/Gibbon’s Legion seniors beat the host team 5-1, earning the championship of the Class C tournament.
Gareth Stroh picked up his third victory of the tourney on the mound, helping his own cause by blasting a solo homer over the right field fence in the third inning.
G/S took advantage of several Hebron miscues and stranded six Hebron runners on base in the game.
After a scoreless first inning S/G tallied two in the second, Stroh’s bomb in the third added another, and Hebron answered with one in the fourth.
Jared Muhlbach slid under the catcher’s tag in the fifth, putting the score at 5-1.  In the final two innings S/G faced just seven batters, two of whom grounded out and four of whom struck out as Shelton/Gibbon claimed the top trophy with the 5-1 win.
The communities of Shelton, Gibbon, and Wood River showed their support with a sizable crowd at the final game.  The three communities have a right to be very proud of the team and the coaches, not only for the final win, but for the way they conducted themselves during the week of the tournament.
